LEGAL action has been launched against a shipping company accused of allowing large amounts of vegetable oil to spill into the sea.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has started legal proceedings against Pretty Time Shipping.

It comes after beaches at Hayling Island and the Witterings had to be closed in January when yellow foam washed up on the beach.

The company is accused of breaching regulations over dangerous or noxious liquids.

The case at Southampton Magistrates’ Court was adjourned until April 7.
