Fog delays American ship's arrival at new Portsmouth jetty

A US ship's arrival at Portsmouth Naval Base's new jetty was dlayed by fog today.

The USNS Robert E. Peary had been due to come alongside this morning - the first vessel to use the new facility built to house the Royal Navy’s massive new aircraft carriers.

But heavy fog in Portsmouth Harbour meant that her arrival had to be rescheduled for 3pm today.

The 40,000-ton ship - about two-thirds of the size of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales - will be the first to use Princess Royal Jetty, formerly known as Middle Slip Jetty, since extensive rebuilding and modernisation.
