Follow Jesus and become covered in a film of dust

The idea is that to learn well from your Rabbi, you have to walk closely behind them every day. The dust in which they tread ends up covering their students.

Christians see Jesus as their Rabbi, or teacher, and so trying to follow Jesus is our way of getting dusty.

But to find out how to do it, we need to read what he said and how he behaved, which is written in the four gospels in the Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Just as newspapers give us different details about a news story, the four gospel accounts of Jesus’s life each show us different things about him.

At St Columba Church, we are delving into Luke’s gospel to find out more about Jesus.

The weekly sessions will help us understand what he was like through the eyes of Luke, who was probably a doctor. He seemed to care particularly about Jesus healing people and also wrote more than the other gospel writers about women and included a lot of detail about Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Everyone is welcome to join us for these discussions which start on Wednesday, May 25.

At that session the theme will be Miracles. Several of Jesus’s miracles only appear in Luke’s gospel, including when he healed 10 people suffering from leprosy. We will look at how Luke writes about miracles and what they mean to us today.

On Wednesday, June 1 we will be looking at parables.

Jesus taught in parables, which are stories with a moral. The teaching about how to live is still important today.

And in our final session on Wednesday, June 8 we will be looking at Jesus’s birth and death. We think we know the story of the nativity really well, but did you know that donkeys aren’t mentioned at all? In this session we will look at what Luke tells us about Jesus coming to earth as a man, and about his death and resurrection at the first Easter.
