A FORMER MP has been given a top job to help promote science.

David Willetts, who was Havant’s MP from 1992 until he stepped down earlier this year, will take up the post of chairman of the British Science Association (BSA).

Mr Willetts, who served as the Minister for Universities and Science from 2010 to 2014, won acclaim for supporting the UK’s science sector during his time in government.

Imran Khan, chief executive of the BSA, said: ‘It is testament to the energy and excitement gathering with the new vision of the BSA, to position science at the heart of society and culture.

‘He’s a perfect example of how you can be passionate about science without a formal training, having become a regular at science festivals and conferences.’

Mr Willetts, who still has a home in West Street, Havant, said: ‘This is an exciting time to be joining the association.’
