Former nurse jailed for child porn

A former Royal Navy nurse has been jailed for swapping indecent images of children over the internet.

Anthony Byrne trawled internet chat rooms looking for perverts with whom he could exchange pictures of children being sexually abused.

Police raided Byrne's home on October 16 last year after they received information from detectives in Kent about obscene webchats he had been having with another individual.

Officers seized the 57-year-old's tower unit, laptop and computer disks. After the items had been examined police found more than 2,200 images of child pornography.

There was also evidence of explicit web chats with other men and proof he had been swapping pictures over the internet.

At Portsmouth Crown Court Byrne, of Thames Drive, Fareham, was jailed for 18 months.

The court heard that Byrne was married with two grown-up sons and had served in the navy as a nurse for many years. Byrne was banned from working with children indefinitely and will remain on the sex offenders' register for the next 10 years.

He admitted eight counts of distributing indecent images of children and 15 counts of possessing indecent pictures of children.

Judge Gareth Cowling said: 'It is a tragedy to see a man like you with no previous convictions and a good career standing in the dock facing charges such as these.

'But an even greater tragedy than that is the children appearing in these images who have been abused.'
