ELDERLY people are being offered free computer lessons to help them get up to speed with new technology.

Age UK has named Friday Silver Surfers Day and will offer classes to the older generation showing them how to get the most out of using the internet.

It’s thought that across Britain there are still 9m people who have yet to go online and during the National Digital Conference representatives from Age UK decided to help tackle that figure.

Sessions will run from 11am to 3pm on Friday in the IT Suite at Age UK’s Portsmouth branch The Bradbury Centre on Kingston Road, and simultaneously across the UK.

A spokesman from the group’s Portsmouth branch said: ‘We are continuing to help older people access the internet, as we have done for many years now.

‘Absolute beginners are especially welcome and can come in and see how easy it can be.

‘If their sons or daughters, brothers or sisters have made them a present of a laptop or digital camera, they can bring it with them and they can be helped to learn to use it.’
