Friends of the Earth to hold a '˜streets for people' meeting

GETTING people to care more about their local area will be top of the agenda as the Friends of the Earth hold a public meeting in Portsmouth next week.

The campaign group has announced that the public meeting will be held on Monday, October 15 at the Discovery Centre, St John's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Bishop Crispian Way.

Starting at 7.30pm, the event will take on the theme of '˜streets for people' '“ after the group discovered that it had organised an event with a very similar title 25 years ago.

Group coordinator Rachel Hudson said: '˜We were really surprised to discover that our group had organised two meetings about making Portsmouth's streets better for people exactly 25 years apart, and even more surprised that we picked almost the same date.

'˜Sadly, Portsmouth's streets are still dominated by cars.

'˜The meeting is open to all and we want as many people as possible to come along and help identify ways to create streets for people throughout our city.'

Ideas from the meeting will be given to Portsmouth City Council.
