East Hampshire District Council has agreed to release the money from developers’ contributions to create new play areas and upgrade existing ones.

The biggest project will be Jubilee Field in Horndean where an adventure-style playground is set to be installed, including a tyre swing, cableway and a rope climber.

The existing play area will be replaced with a ‘themed play space’ aimed at younger children under adult supervision.

Three other parks will be renovated: Five Heads will get a new triple swing; Deep Dell a new roundabout, a youth shelter and new benches; and Downs Park a youth shelter.

In Clanfield, a new skatepark will be created at Peel Park to replace the 20-year-old skate ramp.

It comes after a local skateboarder set up a Facebook page and got the backing of Clanfield Parish Council.

The total cost will be £78,000 – about £40,000 from East Hampshire and £38,000 from the parish council.

Groundwork South, based in Gosport, has helped to draw up the plans for the playground at Jubilee Field after consulting about 700 people, many of them children.

Horndean councillor Elaine Tickell said: ‘What’s going in is actually what they want rather than things councillors and consultees would like to see there. We are really pleased with it.’

Fellow councillor Sara Schillemore was pleased the area was getting more facilities, but was concerned that the Jubilee playground was too close to houses and there could be noise issues.

She said: ‘It would be nice to move it away from residential properties.’

A planning application for Jubilee Field is currently being considered by the council.

One parent wrote to the council to say: ‘We live not far from the park with our two-year-old son, who would just love the new play area.’
