PEOPLE will be battening down the hatches as gale force winds are expected across the south coast this evening.

An intense area of low pressure could bring severe gales to some exposed coasts tonight.

The Met Office is predicting winds of around 40mph at 9pm when the storm is expected to reach its peak in the Portsmouth area.

Exposed coastal areas could see stronger gusts.

A spokesman said: ‘Gales will affect some southern coastal counties of England on Wednesday evening. Gusts will reach 50 to 60 mph quite widely, with 70 mph gusts likely in exposed coastal areas.’

The worst of the storm is expected to hit northern areas and Scotland.

Winds will die down by tomorrow morning, but windy conditions are expected to return on Friday evening and into Saturday.
