GOSPORT will be going for gardening gold when judges come to town next week for a national competition.

Judges from the RHS Britain in Bloom competition will be spending Tuesday morning touring Gosport with local volunteers as part of the small city category.

Gosport will be scored on horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.

Roger Burnett, chairman of the judging panel, said: ‘Our finalists have had to endure difficult weather conditions and ongoing council cuts.

‘But I love seeing the imaginative ways communities that overcome challenges. It was reported that groups were pulling out of Britain in Bloom because of these problems but, in fact, we’ve had a 10 per cent increase in the number of groups signing up this year.’

The awards are announced on October 6.
