EMERGENCY repairs to a road caused rush hour delays yesterday morning.

Engineers worked throughout the weekend after a gas leak was detected in Newgate Lane in Fareham on Friday evening.

The leak was fixed by Sunday night but work to put the road back to its original condition continued through Monday, causing tailbacks for traffic yesterday morning.

Samantha O’Connor, Scottish and Southern Energy spokeswoman, said: ‘Our engineers were made aware of a smell of gas in Newgate Lane on Friday. We immediately contacted the local authorities to update local residents of the works. A leak was identified and repairs commenced straight away. The engineers worked throughout the night and completed the repairs by midday on Sunday.’

The road was able to be reopened last night. Ms O’Connor added: ‘We would like to thank the local residents for their patience during these emergency works.’
