A COUPLE who admitted controlling a prostitute have been handed suspended jail terms by a judge.
Portsmouth Crown Court heard Declan Brooker and Christina Bell made the woman, who had previously set herself up as a prostitute online, do more than she wanted and kept some cash.
Judge Sarah Munro QC imposed a 57-week prison term suspended for two years for both Brooker and Bell.
At an earlier hearing where she was asked to give a maximum sentence indication, the judge said the pair spent the takings on cannabis and food for themselves.
The court heard the victim, who cannot be named, set herself up as an escort online prior to their involvement.
Bell, 22, and Brooker, 20, pictured, both of Nobes Avenue, Bridgemary, were sentenced earlier this year.
Both pleaded guilty to controlling a prostitute for gain on April 16 on a basis.
The charge is dated between August 1 2013 to July 30, 2014.
The victim cannot be named for legal reasons.
Frank Abbott, defending Bell, said his client was pregnant at the time of the court hearing.
He said the complainant also did not want Bell and Brooker to get in trouble.
Referring to body-worn video footage he said: ‘What she’s saying, the complainant, I don’t really want to get them into trouble but I wasn’t getting any money back and perhaps they were making me do a bit more than I wanted to.’
He added: ‘There was a time money was being placed for safe-keeping – not enough was coming back to the complainant.’
Daniel Reilly, defending Brooker, said: ‘Drugs have featured in his life previously – he’s not taking anything illicit.’
Bell must complete 24 months’ supervision and 12 sessions of a specified activity. Brooker must complete 180 hours of unpaid work.
Bell has four court appearances for two criminal offences and Brooker has 24 court appearances for 45 offences.
