Gosport Michaelmas Fayre celebrates the start of Autumn

The fete, which took place in Alverstoke, Gosport marks the start of autumn and celebrated its 27th anniversary.

Organised by the Gosport Rotary Club, a record 110 stalls were at the event, most of which were charities looking to boost funds for their respective causes.

There was also a Chinese dragon dancer which was staged by Marshall Cheung, owner of restaurant Little Palace, as well as entertainment from HMS Sultan Marching Band and Corps of Drums, Morris dancers, a magician and singers.

Simon Mason, president of Gosport Rotary Club, said: ‘We were absolutely delighted by the turn out.

‘The event takes a lot of planning and we start doing so in January for an event in September.

‘It is all about community and all of the charities making money for their own usage and an event that has something for every member of the family.’

The Rotary Club had a stall at the fayre which was highly popular.

Malcolm Dent, of the Rotary Club, said: ‘Today was all about community and a great time for people to get together.

‘We’re lucky that the sun has been out for the past few years.

‘The public loves it because all of the cars are shut off.

‘It’s like an old village fete where people walk through the street buying things and enjoying the entertainment.

‘Every year the Rotary Club have a bottle stall that people win at every time.

‘They pay £2 and could win a bottle of Champagne or a bottle of water but because of the concept, people patronise the stall and have a go.’

The Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Lynn Hook, was in attendance and was thrilled by the number of people who attended.

Cllr Hook said: ‘It is a great turnout again and the event is always well supported.

‘I always say that although Gosport is a town that has more than 80,000 people in it, there is a real community feel. Everyone knows everybody somehow and it is an amazing place to live in.’
