WHILE most people were still tucked up in bed, Luke Morrison was setting on a solo sailing challenge to raise money for a medical charity.

The 29-year-old, from Gosport, was up at 4am yesterday and preparing his 14ft Laser dinghy for a 7am start for his single-handed sail around the Isle of Wight.

Heading off from Hill Head Sailing Club, he was raising money for Basics Hampshire, a charity with a team of doctors who give up their free time to help save people’s lives.

Luke made good time round the island – coming home to a flotilla welcome shortly after 5pm.

He said afterwards: ‘They weren’t ideal conditions, it was very windy on the far side of the island, so there were a lot of large waves.

‘But coming around the rest of it was very nice. It was an enjoyable experience, but hard work.

‘Seeing the flotilla was very welcoming, with all my family and friends. They gave me a cup of tea, which was just what I needed.’

He originally planned to take up the challenge in June but came down with pneumonia and a planned attempt on Saturday was abandoned when it was thought weather conditions weren’t right.

He has so far raised £3,600 towards his target of £10,000.
