Jean Myles, from Fratton, Portsmouth, will be taking part in the Rainbow Centre’s Zip Wire Challenge on Sunday, June 19.

The grandmother-of-five will join others in going down a 35-metre high, 300m-long zip line across the lake at 1000 Lakeside business park in North Harbour, which has donated the venue for free.

Jean decided to hit the heights ahead of her 91st birthday in August, to raise money for the Fareham-based Rainbow Centre.

She said: ‘The Rainbow Centre charity does a marvellous job so I’m extremely pleased that I can take on this challenge to support them.

‘When I heard about the zip wire I knew I had to sign up.

‘At my age I thought it was about time that I lived a little and did something crazy.

‘The Rainbow Centre really inspires me. They’re amazing, helping adults and children learn how to do things like walk and talk.’

Jean is hoping to raise £300 for her sky-high challenge – and now others are being encouraged to join her.

Lara Bull, CEO of the Rainbow Centre, was inspired by the 90-year-old’s decision to tackle the zip wire and will also be taking part on the day.

She said: ‘Once I heard that Mrs Myles had signed up it gave me the courage to sign up, too. She is an avid supporter of the charity and regularly donates proceeds from the Rainbow dolls she knits and sells to friends.

‘She is now going above and beyond for the Rainbow Centre and we cannot thank her enough, along with everyone else who has already signed up.’

The Rainbow Centre works with children and adults with cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, MS and those recovering from a stroke or head injury, teaching them the skills most of us take for granted which enables them to lead more independent lives.

Entry to the Zip Wire Challenge, which will run from 9.30am-5.30pm, costs £20 with all proceeds going directly to the Fareham-based charity. You must be aged six or over to take part. Visit or call 01329 289500.
