A COMMUNITY garden which produces fruit and vegetables for residents has been shortlisted for a cash boost.

Southsea Greenhouse, near Canoe Lake, will be among other local groups hoping to get their green fingers on the Big Green Leaf Community Award at an environmental family fun day at Portsmouth’s Ocean Retail Park.

The Underneath The Big Green Leaf event will give families the chance to take part in lots of free fun and interactive sustainability activities from beneath a giant inflatable leaf canopy.

At the event, visitors will also be able to vote with tokens for the community group they feel is most deserving of a prize of up to £1,000 towards their environmental project or initiative.

Sue Stokes, one of the founders of the Southsea Greenhouse, said she was happy to take part.

She said: ‘With a community garden at Canoe Lake, our supporters and hundreds of volunteers have helped us grow from a fledgling social enterprise into a working community co-operative.

‘We formed to tap into the amazing resources and talents across the city and promote local produce.

‘We also wanted to change the way people shop, celebrate the creativity of the area, and improve what you get from our seafront.’

The family event is being held at the Ocean retail park, off Burrfields Road, in Copnor, on August 30 between 11am and 4pm.
