It will be the first time one has been held in Gosport and it comes as Portsmouth Pride’s annual event becomes more and more popular.

Organisers are hoping to have a parade from Walpole Park to the high street and back again.

They are currently in talks with Gosport Borough Council about holding the event.

A spokesman from Gospride said: ‘We want the wider community to be represented and a part of this special day to show their support of equality and diversity.

‘We are in the early stages still but paperwork has been sent to the council.

‘It will be open to all those who support the message we are trying to spread.

‘Our theme is Reach Out and Join Hands and we hope to celebrate that with a pride parade in the town centre.

‘We feel that this event will attract attention from the area and bring people in to Gosport.

‘Our vision is to build on the first pride with a view to holding one every year.’

The group is calling for businesses and organisations in the area to support them with sponsorship, donations and fundraising.

The spokesman added: ‘We want to organise a day where people are free to express themselves without prejudice in a safe and secure environment.

‘We would therefore like to ask if there are any community groups who would like to help or support us to get in touch.

‘It doesn’t how you support us, it will help us to provide a fun-filled family event which is open to everyone regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or race.

‘We also want to provide a few stalls offering support and advice to those who want it.

‘The pride will promote equality, as well as celebrate diversity within Gosport.

‘It will help to build confidence and help develop a community awareness and raise awareness of LGBT issues.’
