Guide to Remembrance Sunday events across the Portsmouth area

SCHOOLS, shops, town centres and military bases will fall silent today to mark Armistice Day.

Two-minute silences will be taking place across the area in the run-up to this weekend’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

Here is a list of Remembrance events taking place on Sunday:

n Portsmouth: A parade will march through Guildhall Square from 10.30am, led by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood and the Salvation Army Portsmouth Citadel Band. The service will begin at 10.58am.

A gun from HMS Nelson will fire at 11am to start the two-minute silence.

n Southsea: Wreaths will be laid at the Royal Naval Memorial from 11am.

n Milton: Veterans are invited to join a free buffet at the The Rose in June pub in Milton Road after the Remembrance services.

n Emsworth: Annual uniformed youth remembrance Parade at St James Church, Emsworth. Parade leaves Queen Street at 2.35pm and will head to St James’ Church, in North Street, arriving at 2.50pm.

n Portsdown Hill: A uniformed detachment from Ubique Right of the Line will fire the British 18-pounder field gun on the parade to mark the beginning and end of the two-minute silence at 11am at Fort Nelson, in Portsdown Hill Road.

n Gosport: A service will be held at the War Memorial Hospital in Bury Road. A ceremonial guard from HMS Sultan will muster at 10.30am with the service beginning att 10.54am.

n Fareham: A Forever Remembered service takes place at the war memorial, in West Street from 10am. At 10.31am a parade will leave the Duke of Connaught’s Own Club in Western Road and arrives at war memorial, with a two-minute silence and wreath laying held at 11am followed by a service in the Holy Trinity Church.

n Havant: A Remembrance Sunday parade and act of remembrance will take place at the war memorial at 10.30am outside St Faith’s Church, in North Street, followed by service inside the church.

n Hayling Island: A parade will leave from Mengham car park, at 10.40am followed by a service at St Mary’s Church, in Church Road at 11.15am.
