A Hampshire district is the happiest in the whole country, a survey has revealed.Â

The 95,800 residents of Rushmoor '“ which includes the towns of Aldershot and Farnborough '“ scored highest in the Office of National Statistics (ONS) happiness survey. 

While the national average for happiness was 7.5 out of 10, the district had an average happiness level of 8.3 out of 10.

The happiness survey was part of the ONS's annual Personal well-being in the UK bulletin '“ with the data gathered between April 2017 and March 2018.

It includes estimates of life satisfaction, feeling that the things done in life are worthwhile, happiness and anxiety at the UK, country, regional and local authority level.

Silvia Manclossi, head of ONS's quality of life team said: '˜An important part of our work is looking beyond the economic health of the country to how its people are faring and inequalities in society.

'˜Today, for the first time, we have identified how factors such as health, access to services and crime levels may affect how people rate their well-being in different parts of the UK.

'˜This can help local authorities and other organisations to better understand where services could be targeted to help improve the well-being of people in their area.'

Happiness

The national average for happiness in the UK was 7.5 out of 10. 

Here is how places in our area scored their happiness levels: 

- Portsmouth: 7.5 out of 10

- Gosport: 7.4 out of 10

- Fareham: 7.9 out of 10

- Havant (including Hayling Island and Waterlooville): 7.5 out of 10

- Southampton: 7.4 out of 10

Which means that Portsmouth is a happier place the Southampton. 

Life satisfaction

The national average for happiness for life satisfaction was 7.7 out of 10.
