Hampshire firefighters joined colleagues in Suffolk as the east coast county was hit by tidal surges.

One of Hampshire’s water rescue response teams is now on its way back to base after yesterday’s alert, as well as a crew on the high volume pump from Hardley, Ringwood and Hythe.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: ‘One water rescue crew of eight remains in Suffolk following yesterday’s request from the National Coordinating Centre to deploy as part of national arrangements.

‘We opened up the Major Incident Room (MIR)and this has been running overnight to coordinate resources nationally and locally.’
