Hampshire's new High Sheriff begins year in office

THE county's new High Sheriff has begun her new year in office.

Hon Mary Montagu-Scott started the ceremonial role – which is well over 1,000 years old – last week.

It is an entirely voluntary position, non-political and lasts for only 12 months with the aims of the role to support the judiciary, police and prison service as well as promote crime prevention, education and voluntary organisations across the county which work in the sectors.

Ms Montagu-Scott is the sister of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and recently signed her declaration to the Hon Mr Justice Warby in Winchester in front of an assembly of officers.

She said: ‘I am so looking forward to the year ahead and having the privilege of meeting so many interesting and dedicated people working in law and order in our county.’

The High Sheriff has not picked a theme for the year.
