Havant borough councillors to take charge of grants for projects with new scheme

A NEW scheme means councillors can give grants to projects of their choice.

The Community Grant Scheme, which was approved by Havant Borough Council, means the borough’s 38 councillors will have access to £1,000 to award to voluntary and not-for-profit organisations within, or that benefit, their ward.

Local projects and initiatives can approach ward councillors and apply to secure either a £100 or £200 grant.

The scheme will be piloted for the remainder of the financial year and if successful will be factored into the budgeting process in early 2017.

Cllr Leah Turner, cabinet lead for communities and housing, said: ‘There are many excellent groups throughout the borough who work hard to support local communities and people in need.

‘With so many excellent groups working hard we are always faced with difficult decisions when considering funding applications.

‘With this new scheme each councillor will be able to make a difference within their own wards.’
