Hayling Island Community Centre gets £500,000 boost for extension

COMMUNITY centre users are celebrating after the Big Lottery Fund handed over almost half a million pounds to build a much-needed extension.

Hayling Island Community Centre Association has been awarded £498,000 so it can meet increased demand and offer more facilities and services.

The two-storey extension will consist of a community café and kitchen on the ground floor, with seating for up to 40 people, a disabled toilet, lift and stairs to the first floor.

The first floor will house three meeting rooms, which can open up to one larger flexible space with the use of the acoustic room dividers. Doors will lead to an outside covered seating terrace for cricket and football spectators and café customers.

Centre administrator Tina Lambert said: ‘We are a very busy centre, and have reached capacity. We are having to turn away new groups because we just don’t have the room. This grant will mean we will be able to provide lots more new opportunities for people of all ages.’
