AN EQUALITY and diversity lead at a health trust has been named as a ‘Black and Minority Ethnic Pioneer’.

Ricky Somal, who works for Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, which provides community care in the Portsmouth area, has been given the title by the Health Service Journal.

The HSJ’s BME Pioneers list celebrates the top 50 influential leaders and their outstanding contributions to the healthcare sector.

Mr Somal said: ‘I’m delighted to have been included in this list. It’s humbling to hear about so much fantastic work happening across the healthcare sector to make our work places more inclusive.’

The HSJ highlighted how he has developed an equality standard toolkit, which allows each division within the trust to measure itself against a set of standard criteria, and their evidence is endorsed with a bronze, silver or gold accreditation. Mr Somal was also recently awarded the Personal Fair Diverse Champion award from NHS Employers for transforming the delivery of diversity across the trust.
