HEADACHES, mild tummy upsets, colds, sore throats, or minor cuts can all be treated with a well-stocked first-aid kit.

That’s the message coming from the primary care trust Ship, which covers Portsmouth and Hampshire, to ensure minor ailments don’t ruin festive fun.

Medical director Dr Stuart Ward said: ‘With so much going on at Christmas, people can easily keep themselves and their guests feeling jolly with a well-stocked self-care kit.

‘Your community pharmacist can advise you on the best things to keep handy to deal with any minor illnesses that can strike, leaving you more time to enjoy the season rather than waiting unnecessarily for NHS care.’

A basic self-care kit should include paracetamol, paracetamol for children, aromatic inhalers, thermometer, plasters, non-absorbent cotton wool, elastic bandages and assorted dressings, safety pins, tweezers and scissors, mild laxative, anti-diarrhoea medicine and antiseptic solution and cream.
