AFTER years of planning and negotiation, work is about to start on an extension to a sports centre.

Waterlooville Leisure Centre, which is run by the charity Horizon, will get a major makeover with a two-storey extended gym and exercise studio on the first floor, and a children’s indoor play centre.

There will be a new kitchen and cafe in the main foyer.

It follows the major renovations at Havant Leisure Centre earlier this year.

Horizon’s chief executive Howard Broad said: ‘We’re delighted the phase one extension is now under way.

‘It’s taken a lot of hard work but the range of facilities are desperately needed and will encourage all age groups within the rapidly expanding community to take up healthy exercise, tackle obesity and improve social well-being.

‘The new facilities will help our aim to make a difference to people’s lives by helping them keep fit and healthy.’

Work should be completed by summer 2015.
