HEARTBROKEN mum Kelly McNaughton has paid tribute to her daughter who died at just 14 months old, describing her as a funny, smiley and happy baby.

Sydnee McNaughton died in November 2012 after suffering a seizure.

A post mortem showed that she had a defect in her brain which made her prone to fits.

At the time of her death, Sydnee had a viral infection, and it was this coupled with the brain defect that led to her death.

Kelly, 23, from Sparrowhawk Close in Hilsea, said: ‘She was funny. She took her first steps on that day, hours before.

‘She was a smiley little girl. She used to smile even when she wasn’t well.

‘She was very close to her family. She was the baby of the family so everybody doted on her.’

Kelly has two other children – Leah, eight, and Terry, four.

She said it was difficult for the whole family to come to terms with Sydnee’s death.

She said: ‘It was devastating. Everyone was so shocked more than anything.

‘We still are. We can’t get our heads round why. Part of the family was missing.’

But Kelly said she’s happy that Sydnee enjoyed her short life.

‘She did so much in her life. We did everything we could with her. She lived her life to the full every day,’ she said.

At an inquest, David Horsley, the coroner for Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire concluded that Sydnee’s death was as a result of natural causes.

Addressing Sydnee’s family, he said: ‘In this case, Sydnee was a much-loved and well cared for little girl.

‘Sadly she had ongoing health problems all through her little life.

‘On the basis of this I’m satisfied that her death was due to natural causes.

‘It doesn’t make it any less of a tragedy for you. I wish I could take this all back. I’m so awfully sorry.’

Sydnee’s family are raising money for a gravestone.
