FOUR gym members have set themselves a challenge to collectively lose 8st and raise £5,000 for charity.

The group, who all go to Fareham Leisure Centre, hope to shed the pounds and raise the cash for Breast Cancer UK by May 1.

The sponsored slim has been organised by Pete Salero, 72, in support of his wife, Maureen, who had a mastectomy in April last year after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Maureen is now in remission but 16st 10lb Pete saw the experience as a wake-up call and he approached fellow gym members at Fareham Leisure Centre to take on the weight loss challenge.

Pete, from World’s End, said: ‘I knew that I had to lose the weight and the added incentive of raising money for a cause that helped my wife really spurred me on – I decided it was now or never.’

The team comprises Pete, Diana Rogerson, 59, Rami Hilmi, 45, and Cherry Speed, 41.

The sponsored slim started on February 1 and the group has lost more than 2st through dieting and regular exercise – already raising more than £1,900 for the cause.

To mark the end of their sponsored slim, the team has organised a live music night at Fareham Leisure Centre on Saturday, May 2.

Pete, who is a singer, will be performing on the night, and there will be a raffle.

Tickets cost £5.
