SMOKERS are being encouraged to take up the challenge and stamp out their smoking habits for 28 days next month.
Stoptober is the most popular stop smoking challenge in West Sussex. About 19 per cent of people in the county smoke.
Smokers are five times more likely to stay smoke free if they can give up for 28 days.
Christine Field, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: ‘Stopping smoking is the single most important thing that any smoker can do to improve their health.
‘We know that it isn’t always easy, but the rewards are huge. Evidence shows that you’re more likely to be successful with the support of local stop smoking services.
‘If you can quit for the 28 days of Stoptober you’ll begin to experience noticeable financial, physical and health benefits.’
