A DOCTOR-LED team has been chosen to run the out-of-hours GP services in south Hampshire.

The GP-headed consortium, known as Portsmouth Health Limited (PHL), has been named preferred bidder for a new five-year contract to run the GP out-of-hours service from this October.

PHL is made up of doctors who work in Hampshire.

They are working with the independent healthcare provider Care UK to run the service with care providers Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust.

It will cover Portsmouth, Southampton and the south of Hampshire and serve a population of around 1.4m people.

Dr Tim Wright, medical director of PHL, is excited about the contract.

He said: ‘We are delighted to have won this important bid.

‘This is a really exciting opportunity for GPs to lead the out-of-hours service for a large part of Hampshire.

‘This is a service for Hampshire’s people run by Hampshire GPs.’
