A HOSPITAL trust has urged patients to make the right choices over the bank holiday weekend by contacting the correct people for their medical needs.
A statement released by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust said: ‘For non-emergency medical complaints we would encourage patients to contact their GP, visit a local pharmacy, or call 111 as soon as they start to feel unwell or ill.
‘Our emergency department often sees a sharp rise in the number of patients over bank holidays, and in the days that follow – but there are other, more appropriate places that people could go for more minor treatment.’
The trust suggests the following minor injuries units as alternatives to accident and emergency:
n St Mary’s NHS Treatment Centre, Milton Road, Portsmouth, open 8am until 9.15pm, every day. Telephone: (0845) 076 5551.
n The Minor Injuries Unit at Gosport War Memorial Hospital, Bury Road, Gosport, open 8am until 9pm, every day. Telephone: (023) 9279 4753 or (023) 9279 4754.
n Petersfield Hospital Minor Injuries Unit, Petersfield Hospital, Swan Street, Petersfield, open 8am until 6pm, every day. Telephone: 01730 263221.
The statement advises that the emergency department is for breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness, severe chest pain, serious accidents and severe bleeding.
It reminds patients that pharmacies are open over the bank holiday.
