A CALL for more men to join a club to help tackle loneliness has been put out.

The Brendoncare Club Hampshire runs more than 50 volunteer-led friendship and activity clubs across the county for vulnerable older people in a bid to help tackle social exclusion.

The Portsmouth branch meets at the Good Companion pub in Eastern Road, from 11am to 12.30pm on Mondays.

Its members take part in a range of activities including cards, quizzes, games and speakers for £1.

The Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group supported the project with an £840 grant to pay a support worker to develop and set up the club earlier this year.

But of the 25 older people who attend, only two are men, and fundraising officer Joanna Jackson said the group was keen to increase that number

She said: ‘The clubs help older people to retain independence, engage with each other and their local community and develop peer support networks.’
