EXTRA funding has helped to treat 1,790 cancer patients in the region that covers the Portsmouth area.

Since October 2010 the government has put in £9m for cancer drugs in the south central area.

The funding has come from a programme called the Cancer Drugs Fund.

Care services minister Paul Burstow said: ‘Cancer patients, no matter where they live, should have access to the drugs their doctors recommend, which is why we introduced the Cancer Drugs Fund.

‘We can see the fund is making a difference to the lives of thousands of people with cancer.’
