IN the first three weeks of a health number launching, more than 22,000 calls were taken.

The NHS 111 service launched at the end of January.

The number is for people who need medical help or advice and it’s not urgent.

In three weeks, 22,277 calls were answered.

Of these, 82.9 per cent were answered within the national guideline of 60 seconds.

And fewer than four per cent of calls were directed back to 999, which suggests callers are understanding when to use the number.
