TWO cyclists raised more than £7,500 for charity as part of a sponsored bike ride from London to Paris.

Sid Sanderson, from Emsworth, and Chandler Brujo, from Portchester, decided to take part in the 500km Bikeathon in aid of Sid’s niece who suffers from leukaemia.

Rebecca Saunderson, 22, was diagnosed in 2011, but is now in remission.

Sid, a 41-year-old business owner, said: ‘Things are finally looking up for Becky and it’s events like this funding the research that’s making the difference.

‘It was tough but when you see 80-year-old men on bikes going faster than you it gives you the momentum to carry on and it’s almost like a wind tunnel where you get pulled along by their passion and determination.’

Money raised has gone to the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, a UK blood cancer charity.

Sid added: ‘I’ve already signed up for next year and Becky’s brother is taking part too. I really appreciated all the pledges my friends and family made on Facebook and hope we can keep raising money for such a worthy cause.’

His close friend Ian Derry was originally going to join him on the trip, but had to pull out after being hit by a car during training.

Ian, who is now in recovery, was seriously injured a week before the pair were supposed to head off.

Luckily, bike designer, Chandler Brujo, offered to step in after the accident.

He said: ‘Sid’s one of my oldest friends so there was absolutely no second thought when he asked me.’
