A COUNCIL has given the green light to a £1.1m doctors surgery in the centre of Horndean.

Residents have been calling for a new surgery to replace the dilapidated practice in Blendworth Lane, for years but the practice could not afford to pay for one and neither could the Primary Care Trust.

The council saw the redevelopment of the sprawling former Gales Brewery site as an ideal opportunity for a new surgery and struck a deal with the developers, Burton Property, to build one.

At a council cabinet meeting last week councillors agreed to accept the building, worth £675,000, in lieu of £400,000 worth of affordable homes.

Burton Property will only have to build 13 affordable homes instead of 24. The GP practice will buy it from the council after 20 years. The sale of the existing surgery is hoped to net £450,000 towards the new building, with the developers stumping up the rest. Permission has been granted for 73 homes, a care home and a shop on the historic site.
