THE biggest team to enter a new hospice fundraising race is ready to take on the challenge.
Ditcham Park School in Petersfield has got together a group of 61 pupils, staff, and parents.
They are taking part in the first ever Race with Rowan on Saturday, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Rowans Hospice.
The hospice’s mascot Rowan the Meerkat will also be at the race.
Teacher Rachel Hewett has been putting the school team together.
She said: ‘The response has been great – we’ve got staff, pupils and parents taking part.
‘Some people will be wearing a red T-shirt and black shorts like Rowan. It’s fun for the pupils and raises awareness of the hospice.’
About 300 people have signed up to the race so far.
Sophie Gunner, fundraiser at the hospice, said: ‘We are delighted that Ditcham Park School is supporting our first-ever sponsored running event, and we’re really excited to have such a large group taking part.
‘They always support our Moonlit Memories Meander so it’s wonderful that they’re participating in Race with Rowan. We have about 300 people registered but it’s not too late to show your support.’
The run takes place this Saturday, and there is either a 10k or 5k route to choose from.
People can register on the day at 8.30am at Portsmouth Watersports Centre, in Eastern Road.
The 10k timed race starts at 10am and the 5k fun run starts at 10.15am.
Rowan the Meerkat represents The Rowans Meerkat Service, which offers support to children and young people facing loss and bereavement.
Registration on the day for the 5k fun run is £12 for adults and £7 for children. Affiliated runners can register for the 10k race on the day for £15 and non-affiliated runners for £17. There are prizes for winners and the best fancy dress.
