MORE than 1,000 people have now signed up to become members of an NHS trust.

People from all walks of life have become members of Solent NHS Trust, which was created last year and provides a range of community and mental health services across the Portsmouth area.

As part of its progress to become a foundation trust, the trust wants the public to become members to help shape local health services.

The milestone of 1,000 members was reached at a University of Portsmouth fair when scores of students signed up.

Being a member allows people to take part in surveys and focus groups and vote in elections for NHS leaders on the council of governors.

Dr Ros Tolcher, chief executive of Solent NHS Trust, said: ‘We are delighted with the number of people who have chosen to sign up as members of the trust.

‘Our members have already started having their say about the future of our trust and our services through events and surveys.

‘We are looking for at least 6,500 members of the public to join us. I believe that local people will be glad they signed up and feel that membership is worthwhile for them and their families.’
