SHOPS in Hampshire have been caught selling cigarettes to children.

Underage volunteers working for Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service did not have their age challenged in five out of 19 shops visited in Havant, Basingstoke, Chandler’s Ford, Totton and Winchester.

This compares to 10 underage sales as a result of test purchases on 138 shops previously.

Council leader Councillor Ken Thornber said: ‘It is disappointing that underage sales of tobacco have increased.’
