THE time is approaching where a month is dedicated to help people stub out smoking.

Stoptober takes place throughout October, and PompeyQuit will help people stop smoking.

Portsmouth City Council estimates there are around 38,000 over-18 smokers in the city.

Barbara Skinner, public health development manager for smoking, said: ‘Stoptober was fantastic last year and we saw a lot of residents quitting.

‘We would like to do even better this year and so we’re trying to highlight how much easier it can be to quit when you have professional support, and we’re asking people not to go cold turkey.

‘All the stop smoking services on offer in Portsmouth are free, so we want to encourage as many smokers as possible to get in touch with them to get support and advice to quit smoking for life, using Stoptober as a great starting point.

‘If you stopped smoking 20 cigarettes a day you could save £2,400 a year and it could make you and the people around you happier and healthier.’

The national Stoptober roadshow is coming to Commercial Road, in Portsmouth this Sunday, to gear up for the event.
