Hundreds of stylists, beauticians and therapists partied the night away as The News’ Hair and Beauty Awards made a return to the Portsmouth Guildhall.

Salons have been competing all year for the top titles in the prestigious awards and here are this year’s deserving winners.

GLAM and gorgeous was the order of the night as the best of the hair and beauty industry attended the most prestigious awards around.

The News’ annual Hair and Beauty Awards returned for the fourth year to the Portsmouth Guildhall last night.

This year they proved to be bigger and better than ever with a total of 14 categories.

Tony Wood, who owns Tony Wood Hair which is in association with The News’ Hair and Beauty Awards, said the night was the best yet.

Mr Wood, 46, of Castle Road, Southsea, said: ‘It was an amazing evening.

‘Hairdressers work really hard to make people feel good, these awards are about recognising the hard work they put in every day.’

A range of awards were presented to the best salons, stylists, beauticians and therapists in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas.

Mr Wood said: ‘The awards recognise and celebrate the hard work and the talent of all the people involved in our industry. For me it’s especially about supporting and recognising the young people that are new to the industry and encouraging and inspiring them.’

The awards were presented by Wave 105 DJ Mark Collins.

Bridal and Special Occasion Stylist of the Year

WINNER - Annette Bradford from Elegance Bridal Coiffure in Waterlooville

Annette was last year’s winner and she proved that she still has what it takes to be the best in bridal hair.

Her beautiful salon is a tranquil haven of calm for any stressed-out bride and Annette’s caring nature and attention to detail stood out in all her customer testimonials.

Annette makes the stressful task of bridal hair look easy and the talented lady should be an inspiration all stylists who have to style bridal hair.

Junior Stylist of the Year

WINNER - Harry Bailey from The Terrace in Southsea

The judges thought Harry’s entry was so professional and that his attention to detail stood him out from the rest.

His innovative cuts showed that Harry really has his finger on the pulse when it comes to fashionable men’s hair.

Harry has not been at the Terrace in Southsea for long but he has built himself a solid, loyal base of clients who keep coming back for more, proving that although he’s a junior, he’s got what it takes to go all the way.

Nail Technician of the Year

WINNER - Laura Ashton from Crystal Tips in Stubbington

From pretty pink bows to unbelievable intricate pieces of art, Laura has shown exceptional talent as a nail artist.

Her imaginative and creative designs really caught the judge’s eyes.

Laura’s hand-painted bespoke art pieces are worthy of entry into any art gallery.

Her nails offer something different and really must be seen to be believed.

A truly talented artist and you’d be lucky to have her do your nails.

Colour Technician of the Year

WINNER - Kate Eaton of Andrew Price salon in Hilsea

Kate’s passion for her job really stood out when the judges were looking through the entrants.

Her entry was professional and well-thought out and showed what a diligent person she is.

All her customer testimonials said that Kate is one of the most confident and talented colourists in this area.

Kate was the won this category last year and she has shown she has still got what it takes to be top.

Training Centre of Excellence

WINNER - St Vincent College, Gosport

St Vincent College was given the accolade because it upheld the three foundational principles of the industry - knowledge, creativity and technique.

Course tutor Jamie Martin’s passion for the hair industry came across in the student’s work.

The judges were impressed by the standard of the students and felt the academy set a solid base for those about to enter the hair and beauty industry.

Apprentice of the Year

WINNER - Ryan Searle from The Library Barbers Club in Southsea

Ryan has only been qualified for six months and since joining The Library Barbers Club in Southsea has garnered a reputation for being one of the most talented barbers in Southsea.

He has a line of dapper gents queueing up to get their hair cut by him. His cut throat shaves and beard grooming has been labelled ‘phenomenal’.

His boss said it was his hunger to succeed that sets him apart.

Cosmetic Therapist of the Year

WINNER - Dr Virek Shrivastva from Changes Clinic of Excellence, 1000 Lakeside, North Harbour

Virek has delivered some superb customer testimonials in what is arguably one of the hardest categories in The News. Hair and Beauty awards.

The skill required to be a cosmetic therapist is phenomenal and Virek continues to deliver exceptional talent in a professional manner.

Virek’s career at Changes Clinic of Excellence grows daily and his reputation for being a trustworthy and reputable cosmetic therapist is well earned.

Barber of the Year

WINNER - Dan Lee from The Terrace in North End

Dan’s clients come from far and wide to get their hair cut by him. His loyal clients travel miles just to receive Dan’s brilliant service.

Working out of the newly-open North End salon, The Terrace, Dan has already built a reputation for providing dapper gents with on-trend hair cuts.

His tight, smart designs were commended by the judges who labelled them as ‘stylish’ and ‘fashionable’.

The Terrace opened its North End salon in March, following the success of its Southsea salon.

Beauty Therapist of the Year

WINNER - Stephanie Kynaston from The Beauty Boutique in Gosport

Stephanie’s two boutique salons, in Alverstoke and in Titchfield, reflect her passion for the beauty industry.

Her seven years as a beauty therapist has seen her talent and client base grow.

Her desire to help people feel good about themselves was evident in her application.

One of her client testimonials referred to Stephanie as the perfect ambassador for the beauty industry — a title that couldn’t be more fitting for our beauty therapist of the year.

Hair Stylist of the Year

WINNER - Andrew Robertson from Garbo’s Hair in Portsmouth

Andrew is a senior stylist and has been in the hairdressing industry for a decade.

His understanding of the importance a hair cut can have on someone and his consideration for personal styles and tastes made Andrew a clear winner in this category.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Andrew constantly strives to put his creative edge into action.

As Andrew himself said: ‘You’re only as good as your last haircut” and as you can see, Andrew is a cut above the rest.

Beauty Salon of the Year

WINNER - The Westbourne Beauty Clinic in Westbourne

The Westbourne Beauty Clinic, in East Street, continually proves that it is one of the best beauty places in the area.

Clients come from all over the county for the Westbourne Beauty Clinic experience.

It offers a bespoke elite service and believes in going the extra mile.

The clientele has grown, as have the amount of staff, and in July it will be opening its second salon in Westbourne village.

The salon’s focus on training and rewarding the hard work of its staff meant this salon truly shone.

Salon of the Year

WINNER - Review in Petersfield

Review has impressed clients for 25 years and has proved that well-established salons have what it takes to be at the forefront of exceptional customer service and stunning designs while being at the very heart of their community.

Their extensive list of accolades proved to the judges that this salon has been top of its game for years and shows no sign of slowing down.

Their team spirit, camaraderie and the way they treat their staff really made this salon stand out from the rest.

A truly committed salon and one that truly deserves this accolade.

Lifetime Achievement Award

WINNER - Ann Loader of Fringe Waterlooville

This category is one that each year sees dozens of truly awe-inspiring stories.

Nominated by her colleagues and clients, modest Ann has worked at Fringe in Waterlooville for more than 47 years.

Her dedication and commitment to the job is something that we should all aspire to have.

The patient and caring lady makes all of her clients feel like stars and it’s her time to shine with this award.

An incredibly tough category to judge, but Ann is this year’s winner.

Readers’ Choice

WINNER - Headromance

The readers choice category is a new addition to this year’s awards and one that saw nearly 3,000 nominations flood in to The News’ head office.

It gave readers a chance to shine a light on the salons and stylists they felt worthy.

To win the this award is something that Headromance should be really proud of.

This shows they are providing a second-to-none customer service and one that readers did not want to go unnoticed.

To get clients to nominate is a true achievement.
