PEOPLE with learning disabilities can now enrol on a workshop to increase the number of people who vote and engage in politics.

The Love Your Vote campaign is being run by national learning disability organisation Dimensions and Houses of Parliament Outreach Service.

This Thursday a workshop will be held from 10am until midday at the John Pounds Centre, in Queen Street, Portsea.

The workshop will cover all aspects of Parliament and the electoral system, using easy-read materials and presentations, and is open to people supported by Dimensions and the wider learning disability community.

The inspiration for the campaign came as Dimensions found that just 10 per cent of people with learning disabilities supported by the organisation voted in the last election.

Chief executive Steve Scown said: ‘It’s essential for people to be engaged more with the electoral system – low turnouts among people we support are likely due to a lack of education on the subject rather than a lack of interest.’
