LETTER OF THE DAY: Nightmare scenario for our city

Have your say

Beating her fundraising total and running time target, Helen Duffy was full of smiles after completing her first marathon.

The 45-year-old ran in the London Marathon and managed to complete the 26-mile race in four hours, 53 minutes and 13 seconds.

Helen had wanted to run a marathon for a couple of years and was finally able to cross the finish line with thousands of others on April 26.

She says: ‘The marathon was really great.

‘It went better than what I expected and I managed to complete it in under my five-hour target.

‘I think I could have gone a little bit quicker, but the sheer number of runners meant I had to be careful.

‘But it was a great day and the atmosphere was fantastic.

‘Along the whole way people would cheer, which was really good.’

She adds: ‘Luckily the weather held out which made it a lot more enjoyable.’

Helen, from Fareham, was able to get her spot thanks to the charity Kids which had runners raising money for them.

The Fareham-based charity works with disabled children and their families.

Helen was asked to raise £1,600 for the charity. But thanks to fundraisers and sponsorship for running the race, she managed to raise £2,435.

She says: ‘It was exciting when I reached the target and then the total just kept going up.

‘It was really good running for the charity and it was a nice way to get a place in my first London Marathon.

‘I definitely want to run another one.’
