The Wheelhouse is a Rotary community facility that is used by local organisations throughout the year, for a variety of events.

Based adjacent to the foreshore at Salterns Road Hill Head in Lee-on-the-Solent, the site was built back in 1948 as a community location following the Second World War.

In 1981, the Wheelhouse was completely refurbished from head to toe, to help keep the building up to date.

Following on from this, further refurbishment took place in 1991, with the wooden timber being replaced with brick walls.

The Fareham Rotary Club say that this service, which has now stood for almost 70 years – and that it will continue far into the forseeable future.

It has provided carer groups, dementia-friendly clubs and many other charities with a seaside facility second to none in this area.

Chairman of the Wheelhouse Resource Group, Rotarian Chris Thomas, said: ‘We had a fun morning with our buckets and mops to ensure what we offer continues to be kept in peak condition and it is great to know it helps so many groups in this area.

‘As with all things though they don’t look after themselves and fundraising has been needed throughout each year to ensure the Wheelhouse is kept in tip top condition for all to enjoy. It was cleaned thoroughly and every corner and crevice would have passed muster.

‘Throughout each year scores of clubs, groups and societies are able to use the Wheelhouse and these voluntary bodies greatly appreciate the facilities they can offer their members.’
