AMBITIOUS plans to restore Bognor Regis Pier could receive a multi-million pound boost from heritage experts.

Bognor Regis Town Council is hoping to submit a Heritage Lottery bid for up to £5m for the historic seafront structure and the Picturedrome cinema.

Both grade II-listed Victorian buildings would be combined in the application to fund improvement works.

If the fund decides to help, it will appoint an officer and give a small grant to enable initial proposals for to be produced. This would be followed by the need for a detailed initiative before any major funding was provided.

Cllr Paul Wells, the town’s mayor, said the idea came from a meeting with a consultant.

He said: ‘He suggested it might be better to put in a wider grant for other heritage projects in the town if we were going to go forward with one for the pier. We may well be successful if we do that. Any project with the pier is not going to happen overnight.’

The bid is set to be launched in September.
