HMS Brocklesby given a new engine after major upgrade project

WORK to upgrade the aging engines of a Royal Navy minehunter has been completed.

Portsmouth-based HMS Brocklesby has had an overhaul of her 33-year-old engine.

The work was carried out by BAE Systems at the new Minor War Vessels Centre of Specialisation, in the Portsmouth Naval Base.

In addition to the installation of the new fuel-efficient Caterpillar engines, engineers will also be fitting Brocklesby with a new control system and upgraded generator to extend her service life for another 15 to 20 years.

The 600-tonne ship’s refit is due to be finished in 2017 and will see engineers spend 190,000 hours on 9,000 maintenance tasks
