HMS Defender goes head-to-head with Sri Lankan Navy

ROYAL Navy sailors from Portsmouth went head-to-head with the Sri Lankan Navy '“ in a friendly game of football.

HMS Defender played the Sri Lankans at the beautiful game during a trip to Colombo to take on food and supplies.

Unfortunately, Defender’s team lost the clash 3-1.

But the rivalry did help to solidify the navies’ long-standing links.

As well as the match, Defender hosted the British High Commissioner, James Dauris and a offered the Sri Lankan Navy with a capability demonstration.

Lieutenant Commander Sean Trevethan, Defender’s weapon engineer officer, said: ‘The Sri Lankan navy made Defender feel very welcome, being the first British warship to visit in a number of years.’

‘The short stay went far in strengthening relations between the two nations and hopefully paved the way for more frequent visits by Royal Navy warships in the future.’
