Thousands of people regularly line up along Southsea seafront to watch the carrier entering and leaving its home port.

HMS Queen Elizabeth last left Portsmouth on August 18, and first docked in Jacksonville at the start of this month.

The US trip is expected to last about 11 weeks, which will include a trip to New York '“ which could take place in October or November.

After leaving there, the carrier will hit the seas again for the second, more challenging phase of flight trials in the Atlantic.

The Royal Navy won't confirm exact movements of the warship.

Although it is dependent on sea and weather conditions, the hope is that HMS Queen Elizabeth will be back in Portsmouth in December.

And if all goes as planned, the carrier will be back in her home port before Christmas '“ meaning it should be a very happy festival period for the crew and their families.
