A HOMELESS man died in hospital after suffering a fatal fall.

David Simpson, of no fixed address, was found by a security guard lying behind Debenhams in Commercial Road, Portsmouth.

The guard called an ambulance which took the unconscious man to Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham.

Doctors were unable to save his life after discovering he had an extremely serious head injury which had caused bleeding inside his brain.

Mr Simpson, 39, had a long history of being admitted to hospital after drinking large amounts of alcohol, and Debenhams CCTV footage of the night before he was found showed him drunk and falling over repeatedly.

Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Coroner, David Horsley, recorded a verdict of accidental death on Mr Simpson, who was found just after 6am on September 17 last year. The coroner said: ‘David has fallen and injured his head some time in the early hours of the morning.

‘I am quite sure nothing more could have been done.’
