ANIMAL rescue crews, vets and firefighters battled for hours in the cold and wet to save a horse after it became stuck in a ditch.

The incident happened in a field off Mill Lane, on Portsdown Hill, last night.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to help the animal at about 6.30pm.

Despite battling for nearly four hours in the bad weather to try to rescue the horse, the crews had to put the animal down due to the stress it had suffered and its injuries.
